The history of Butterfly
now spans an incredible ten years.

531 weeks. 3721 days. Most (if not all) of this time we were fulfilling our vision of “having fun while doing fantastic work for amazing clients”. Established just before the Global Financial Crisis hit, when the iPhone and Facebook were still but a twinkle in the eye of Jobs and Zuckerberg, Butterfly started the long climb to excellence as a digital agency.

531 weeks.

To mark the occasion, the team took a surprise trip down memory lane, revisiting the offices Butterfly has had over ten years. Along the way stories were shared, about each other, our very first and loyal clients, and the disadvantages of the food choices around the previous office locations. Starting with John’s Southbank apartment, across to Port Melbourne with the multiple offices within 50m of each other, (and the original signage still in place), and then back to the city for an amazing celebration dinner.

Thanks to Catarinas...

...we were absolutely spoiled with an amazing 6 course dinner and matched wine, and a surprising amount of fun was had, with polaroid cameras passed around to capture the night. Long-time employees swapped war stories, with the newbies hearing the quirky tales of the challenges of working in a tiny start-up. Some wished they hadn’t saved ancient photos on a local drive after they made an appearance in a photo book created for John, capturing moments in time from the past decade, with many being familiar faces of the team today. Hairstyles and fashions changed, however the consistent culture and values of the Butterfly team shone through.

The highlights from the last ten years are many, so we collected just a few:

  • Being awarded Best Studio at the Melbourne Design Awards the first year that submissions were entered
  • Developing and launching an internal proprietary CRM and PM system
  • Being listed as one of the fastest growing businesses in Australia on the 2012 and 2016 BRW Fast 100 awards
  • Liz McLean coming onboard as the first Account Manager, and now Butterfly’s CEO
  • Expansion of in-house expertise to create multiple new teams, growing to a 35-strong team today
  • Continuing to support loyal clients who have grown with us
  • Bringing on-board awesome team members very early on who are with us today

Inside of the office we’ve pinged and ponged, ate many a shared lunch, and collaboratively created the company culture. Outside of the office we’ve jumped out of planes, shot each other with balls of paint, and dodged each other on trampolines. It’s these social events, (and resulting rivalries), that connect us as a team, enabling us to do what we do best.

A word from..
